Yunnan Province is an important part of the ecological security barrier in southwest my country, and is the "Kingdom of Plants" and a major flower province. In response to the needs of the national urban and rural ecological environment construction and the development of the flower industry for undergraduate talents. The major of Landscape Gardening in Yunnan Agricultural University started construction in 1999. It was listed as a school-level specialty major in 2010, and was selected as a provincial-level first-class major in 2020. It currently has 2 master's degree authorization for Landscape Plants and Ornamental Horticulture and Ornamental Horticulture. Relying on the Flower Industry System of Yunnan Province, Yunnan Provincial Expert (Gaojunping) Workstation, Key Laboratory of Orchidaceae Research in Universities of Yunnan Province, Flower Research Institute of Yunnan Agricultural University, and Institute of Chinese Flower Culture, the major of Landscape Gardening has built a talent training system of undergraduate and master focusing on the construction of ecological civilization and the development of flower industry.

This major mainly cultivates compound senior professional and technical talents who have basic knowledge of social science, ecology, landscape plants and ornamental horticulture, landscape planning and design and engineering technology, meet the needs of the development of social economy and landscape gardening industry, and can be engaged in garden planning and design, garden engineering construction management, garden plant cultivation and management in enterprises and government departments such as urban and rural construction, landscape gardening, environment and flowers.

This major has an excellent teaching team of ornamental plant curriculum group, and has built a team of 19 teachers, including 4 professors, 6 associate professors, 2 doctoral supervisors, 8 master supervisors, 1 Young and Middle-aged Academic and Technical Leaders in Yunnan Province, 1 post expert of Flower Industry and Technological System in Yunnan Province, 2 experts of “Green Food Brand” in Yunnan Province and 2 Young and Middle-aged Academic and Technical leaders in Kunming City.

The teachers of this major adhere to the combination of theory and practical application, take the social needs as the guide, and actively explore the talent training mode that conforms to the laws of the frontier talent needs. The major promotes teaching with scientific research, strengthens the construction of " ornamental plant " innovation team, and continuously improves the scientific research level and teaching quality. The achievements have made positive contributions to the construction of ecological civilization and the development of flower industry in Yunnan Province.
