The Horticulture Major of Yunnan Agricultural University is based on the frontier, facing the whole country, Southeast Asia and South Asia, serving the horticulture industry in Yunnan, and taking the cultivation of high-quality horticultural talents as the fundamental task. Horticulture was established in 1950, with four years of study and a bachelor's degree in agronomy. The major has been listed as the National Characteristic Major of the Ministry of Education, the Key Major of Yunnan Province, the Advantageous Characteristic Major of Yunnan Province, the First-class Major of Yunnan Province, the Horticultural Innovative Talent Training Base of High-level Universities in Yunnan Province and the Top Innovative Talent Training Base of Yunnan Province. As a key discipline with advantageous characteristics in Yunnan Province, horticulture is the main supporting force for the development of horticulture industry in Yunnan Province, and has become the cradle of horticultural talent training in Southwest China.

The major mainly trains professionals with comprehensive quality in horticultural plant scientific research, production and management, who can be engaged in the production, technology development and promotion, horticultural enterprise management involved in planning and design of horticultural production parks, the cultivation of horticultural crops, the protection of germplasm resources, the breeding of varieties, the control of pests and weeds, the commercialization of horticultural products
